Lent: Spiritual Awakening
Major religions in the world advocate seasons of spiritual awakening. Christians adopted the Jewish practices of fasting, prayer and alms giving presented in Torah. Muslims practice austerity vigorously with serious fasting and prayers daily as a means for spiritual revitalization and awakening. Hindu faith traditions practice months of rigorous fasting and devotions for spiritual illumination. American society is going through a series of crises including, financial, climate, family and spiritual crisis. Crisis can result in new opportunity or it can cause danger and panic. Lent is indeed a greater opportunity for soul searching and new spiritual awakening.
Pope Benedict in his Lenten message focuses on three things; personal holiness, reciprocity and genuine concern for others, as a pathway to spiritual enlightenment. The way we live our daily lives including our mental focus, diet, work and entertainment have a huge impact on our lives for years to come. Discerning our daily lives based on the spiritual practices of prayer, regulation of consumption habits and genuine concern for others will lead us to great spiritual awakening and vitality in personal and community life. Let us begin a very fruitful lent to experience a joyful Easter.
