Lenten Obligations

Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence for the universal church.  Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.  Everyone 18 years of age and under 60 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  This means only one full meatless meal is to be eaten.  Two smaller meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.  Eating between meals is not permitted.  When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

Many parishioners ask, “What is “Planned Giving?”

Planned giving is an area of fundraising that refers to several specific gift types that can be funded with cash, equity, or property. A donor often considers a current gift to an institution as a cash outlay now. In making a deferred gift, a donor can choose to give at a future date, either a number of years from now, or at death.

Creating a planned gift is a life affirming process.  It is a time to reflect about the beliefs that are important to you and how you can continue to support them. Planned giving strategies may be funded through various sources, such as retirement assets, life insurance, securities, cash and real estate.

In the near future, look for a Nativity of Our Lord Planned Giving brochure to arrive in your mail.  Your parish has been and will continue to be an important part of your life.  Please consider the ongoing needs of Nativity of Our Lord Parish as you plan for the distribution of your estate.

A deferred gift is a present decision to make a future gift.

***By now you should have received a copy of the Nativity of Our Lord Planned Giving brochure in your mail. Please give prayerful consideration to the beliefs that are important to you and how you may be able to share and support your parish. You can make a meaningful and lasting difference in your community. Please contact Tracey Barnes if you have any questions.

2012 School Auction ~ “WINTER GARDEN”

Looking ahead, the 29th annual Nativity Catholic School auction will be held on Saturday, November 3, at Northwoods Banquet Center.  The theme will be “Winter Garden” and promises to be a sparkling and magical evening for all.  This is the schools largest fundraiser and is successful because of the many volunteers who are willing to give of their time and talent. New this year will be the opportunity for 2 people to co-chair this event.  If you have an interest in or questions about this position, please contact the Director of Development,  Tracey Barnes at the Parish Office at 715-362-3169 or by e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Thank You ~  Thank you to Janet Jamison, a Nativity School parent that has offered to co-chair this years Nativity School Auction. She has volunteered her time in past auctions, assisting with various duties. We look forward to her leadership and another successful event.

If you are interested in becoming involved with the auction, or learning more about it, please contact Janet at 715-362-6749 or Tracey Barnes at 715-362-3169.

Information and Updates on the Scrip Program PDF Print E-mail

Scrip Hours

Please stop by the Scrip table after all weekend masses, and after the 9:15 am am Mass on Wednesdays at the St. Mary’s site.  Scrip will also be available outside of the the school office at the St. Joseph’s site from 7:45 – 8:15 am on Thursdays and the parish office Mondays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday - Thursday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

UPDATE

The Pomp’s corporate office in Green Bay has decided to no longer participate in our SCRIP program.  Pomp’s here in Rhinelander will continue to support Nativity through a yearly donation of $1,800  and will continue to support the Nativity Auction with their donation of 4 tires.  Nativity parish and school families will also be given a 10% discount off their bill at Pomp’s.  Thank you Tom Moritz and Pomp’s of Rhinelander for supporting Nativity of Our Lord.

What is Scrip?

Do you own a car or truck?  Do you ever get a prescription filled at a national chain pharmacy?  Do you eat out on occasion or go to coffee with friends?  Do you go to a beauty salon, purchase clothes or books or need your furnace fixed?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you could be using the Scrip program and helping your parish and school just through your every day activities.

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”.  When you purchase Scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use Scrip to purchase everyday expenses like groceries, clothing, toys and gifts.  Even gasoline and oil changes can be purchased with Scrip.  With every purchase made with Scrip, you earn revenue for our school and parish.  In addition to many local merchants, the Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of our school and parish to purchase large amounts of Scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other national retailers. Because the Scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Our school buys the Scrip at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to families like yours for full face value.  The discount, from two to fifteen percent or more, is our school and parish’s revenue.
